Breaking down what to expect from the upcoming U-18 matches.
Irtysh vs. Kaisar
Two teams from the lower part of the table will battle for precious points in a head-to-head encounter. Irtysh, currently sitting in next-to-last 11th place, have 4 points to their name, while 9th-placed Kaisar have picked up 5 more. Taraz are between them with 8 points. Consequently, a defeat for the hosts would seriously complicate their situation.
It is worth noting that in eight rounds, Kaisar have yet to finish a single match in a draw – recording three wins and five defeats. How will it unfold this time?
Kairat vs. Zhas Kyran
The Almaty derby holds special significance for both teams – and not just symbolically.
The thing is, Kairat have been on a practically flawless run so far – eight wins out of eight rounds, 38 goals scored, and only one conceded. The Yellow-Blacks are dominating the league and have no intention of surrendering that status.
Zhas Kyran, meanwhile, head into the ninth round trailing the leaders by eight points and sit in third place. Shakhter are also ahead of them with 20 points, compared to the Almaty side's 16. In the event of a defeat against Kairat, the visitors risk not only falling further behind the favorites but also allowing a whole pack of chasers to close in on them.
Zhas Kyran defender Salim Minzhulin will miss another match, serving a five-game suspension picked up in Round 6 for unsportsmanlike conduct after the final whistle. He has three games left to sit out – a fact fans should keep in mind when assembling their Fantasy QJ League lineups.
Shakhter vs. Caspiy
Last season's bronze medalists continue to chase Kairat, hoping for a slip-up from the main title favorites. However, the Miners stumbled themselves in Matchweek 8 – as a reminder, their match against Ordabasy ended in a 1-1 draw. Now, they will look to get back to winning ways.
Things are still not going well for Caspiy: following their victory over Kaisar, the Aktau side have plunged back into a losing streak, which currently stands at three consecutive matches.
The flagship tournament's top scorer – Shakhter midfielder Rassul Akimov – saw his three-match goalscoring run come to an end last round, failing to register any goal contributions in Shymkent. Will he be able to find his clinical edge in the upcoming clash?
Astana vs. KFF Academy
While waiting for Zhas Kyran to slip up, Astana and KFF Academy will fight for a chance to close the gap on the coveted top three. Both teams are locked on 10 points, and a draw will not offer either side any substantial reward in terms of improving their league standing – meaning both opponents will be playing strictly for the win.
Aktobe vs. Tobyl
Meanwhile, there are other teams in the top six harboring ambitions to fight for medals. Alongside Ordabasy, Aktobe and Tobyl both have 11 points and cannot afford a draw or a defeat – especially if Zhas Kyran manage to upset Kairat.
This encounter will be particularly attractive for the fans, as it features the youth version of one of Kazakhstan's classic football rivalries. The combination of tournament stakes and symbolic rivalry is sure to guarantee spectators an entertaining two hours.
Taraz vs. Ordabasy
Finally, another one of Zhas Kyran's pursuers – Shymkent's Ordabasy – will face Taraz in the upcoming round.
Despite the hosts occupying tenth place in the table, the outcome of this clash is far from predictable. This is partly due to the tight goal difference: 13-13 for Ordabasy against 12-16 for Taraz. It is also because Samat Nauryzbayev's men have yet to lose on home turf this season.
Taraz will have extra motivation, as a victory could launch them right back into the mix for the top six, or perhaps even the podium spots, with the mid-table remaining incredibly tight. ```
